Chihuly in Seattle or the Museum of Glass in Tacoma?
Two different institutions, 35 miles apart, constantly confused in search results. Which one you actually want, and why both are worth going to.
Search for Chihuly tickets and you will be shown two places. They are different institutions in different cities, and the mix-up is common enough that people buy the wrong one.
The short version
Chihuly Garden and Glass is in Seattle, at Seattle Center, next to the Space Needle. It is a dedicated exhibition of Dale Chihuly’s work: eight galleries, the Glasshouse and a planted garden.
The Museum of Glass is in Tacoma, about 35 miles south — roughly 40 minutes by car without traffic. It is a museum of studio glass broadly, not a Chihuly exhibition, with a working Hot Shop in a cone-shaped tower. The Chihuly Bridge of Glass is a separate free pedestrian bridge nearby that links the museum to downtown Tacoma, and it carries Chihuly installations you can walk past without paying anything.
Which one you want
Want to see Chihuly’s work, densely, in one place? Seattle. That is the whole premise of the exhibition, and the Glasshouse is the single most photographed piece he has made.
Interested in glass as a craft rather than one artist? Tacoma. The Museum of Glass shows a wider range and the Hot Shop there is a genuine working studio with seating to watch from.
Based in Seattle with one afternoon? Seattle, without hesitation — the Tacoma trip is most of a day once you count the drive both ways.
In Tacoma already, or driving between Seattle and Portland? The Bridge of Glass alone is worth the stop, and it is free.
Why the confusion happens
Chihuly is from Tacoma, and his work is in both cities. Tacoma’s museum has been online far longer and carries more search authority, so it surfaces on queries about the Seattle exhibition even though it is not the thing being asked about. That is a quirk of how search weighs domain strength against relevance, and it costs people money when they buy on the wrong page.
The honest note
Neither is better. They answer different questions, and the Bridge of Glass is the best free glass installation in the state. But if you typed “Chihuly Seattle tickets” and you are staying downtown, the exhibition at Seattle Center is what you meant — and this is its ticket.
